Corona Virus Press Release

Shifnal Town Council has been monitoring closely the advice from Public Health England (PHE), NHS England and The National Association of Local Councils, to prepare and respond to COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Shifnal Coronavirus Helpline – 01952 462271

There has been a local helpline and volunteer group arranged to assist in these challenging times. Please see leaflet for full details of the service that is offered to anyone who may need assistance whilst staying home during the coronavirus outbreak.

What is coronavirus?

A coronavirus is a type of virus. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world. Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

The single most important action we can all take, in fighting coronavirus, is to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives.

When we reduce our day-to-day contact with other people, we will reduce the spread of the infection. That is why the Government has introduced three new measures.

• Requiring people to stay at home, except for very limited purposes.
• Closing non-essential shops and community spaces.
• Stopping all gatherings of more than two people in public.

Every citizen must comply with these new measures. The relevant authorities, including the police, will be given the powers to enforce them – including through fines and dispersing gatherings.

These measures came into effect on Monday 23 March. The Government will look again at these measures after three weeks, and relax them if the evidence shows this is possible.
